Ukraine gets rid of unreliable nuclear fuel supplier without endangering radiation safety – Oleh Korikov

This year, Ukraine has seen some progress in terms of destroying the russian federation’s monopoly on the supply of nuclear fuel for VVER-440 power units designed in the former Soviet Union. Thus, Ukraine is an example for the countries of the European Union on how to get rid of an unreliable supplier of nuclear fuel without endangering radiation and nuclear safety.

Oleh Korikov, Acting Chairman – Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

“We started the trial of American nuclear fuel in the VVER-440 power unit at the Rivne nuclear power plant. In October, the operating organization loaded the first batch into the active zone of the reactor at the Rivne NPP, and it is now in use. This is very important not only for Ukraine – 19 reactors designed in the former Soviet Union are currently in operation in the countries of the European Union. And Ukraine is a signal, an example for our European partners, of how to safely get rid of a really unreliable nuclear fuel supplier without endangering nuclear and radiation safety, as well as the energy security of these countries,” Oleh Korikov explained.
