Physical protection of energy facilities proves effective, this practice should be continued and expanded – Oleksandr Kharchenko

Physical protection of energy infrastructure facilities has proven its effectiveness during targeted enemy strikes. Therefore, this practice must be expanded.

Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director at the Energy Industry Research Center, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

“Physical protection has proven that it is necessary, it has shown that in all cases, except for a direct missile hit, it works. Direct missile hits are possible, but they are rare. Therefore, it is definitely necessary to expand this practice and cover a larger number of facilities as well as complete the works that are already underway,” he emphasized.

However, Oleksandr Kharchenko believes that building protection for energy facilities is not a matter of several weeks, because this process is long and requires 6-8 months.

“As far as I remember, just for Ukrenergo, the volume of concrete alone for those planned second-level shelters, was about 10 times more than what the Emirates spent when building the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Therefore, the volume of work is really large, and it will take months. Right now, it is important for us not to stop, but to continue building them, to continue installing protection and improving it. Work on this really never stops,” he added.
