In 2023, Office of Commissioner for State Language Protection receives 3,692 complaints about violations of language legislation

In 2023, the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language received 3,692 appeals from citizens regarding violations of language legislation. These encompassed various domains, such as Internet representations (one fourth of all appeals), advertising, street signs, education, healthcare, service, government agencies and information on goods and services.

Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

According to him, the largest number of appeals came from Kyiv. However, appeals also originated in Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk and Kyiv regions.

“In terms of regions, the largest number of appeals received at our office came from Kyiv. On the one hand, there is a sufficient number of violations, but it is also a sign of language awareness, language stability and the reluctance of Ukrainian citizens to put up with the violation of their rights in various spheres of public life in Kyiv. The runners-up are: Kharkiv region (where the lion’s share of violations are from the city of Kharkiv), Odesa region, Dnipropetrovsk region, and partially Kyiv region. This is a kind of the main five, and we cooperate with the head of every region. There are already positive results as well as results yet to be reached,” said Taras Kremin.
