Igor Semyvolos: Risk of combining U.S. aid for Ukraine and Israel in one package lies in putting two wars in single plane
The situation with combining the U.S. aid for Ukraine and Israel in one package requires us to look for better ways of explaining the current events in the world inclined to pick simple solutions.
Igor Semyvolos, Executive Director at the Association of Middle East Studies, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“The combination of funding for Ukraine and Israel in one package basically puts these two wars in a single plane. Based simply on the nature of these wars, which have different causes and different origins, different circumstances, this to a certain extent complicates our relations with Arab countries, Muslim countries and countries of the Global South in general. In this situation, we need to look for an explanation in a world where we tend to focus on simple solutions, simple layouts. That is, it is a serious challenge for Ukrainian diplomacy, and I hope that they are aware of it,” he said.
At the same time, Igor Semyvolos pointed out the key aspects that affect the position on the joint aid package for Ukraine and Israel.
“There are, of course, two aspects here. On the one hand, I perfectly understand the logic of the American administration, they need to overcome the resistance that has arisen lately. For the main part it is not Ukraine that caused it to arise, but internal political events in the U.S. itself. That is, the upcoming presidential campaign and, accordingly, the growing confrontation between Republicans and Democrats in the midst of all the scandals with Trump, and accordingly, the active actions of the Trump minority even among the Republican Party. And this combination, it should at least convince a significant number of Republicans, who traditionally support Israel, to just vote for the package. On the other hand, the situation is quite serious from the point of view of communication with the Arab world or, relatively speaking, with the Global South,” he explained.
