Finland will be able to transfer F/A-18 to Ukraine no earlier than 2024-2025 – Finnish military expert
But by then they will be outdated. This was stated by Henri Vanhanen, military expert, research fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs in Helsinki, at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Odesa.
He noted that the discussion about the possibility of transferring the weapons to Ukraine has been going on in Finland for several months, and the issue was raised by the former Minister of Defense.
“But I’m not sure that we can transfer these aircraft to Ukraine now. Most likely, this can only happen in 2024-2025, when the modernization of the Finnish Air Force is completed. And I would note that by that time these aircraft will be outdated, and their modernization will require significant investment. And Ukraine needs help right now,” – the expert said.
He added that it would be better to insist on supplying Ukraine with F-16s now, as they would be more useful.
“Perhaps we could also provide them. But we can already train your pilots, we are discussing this possibility. We have very good simulators and all the conditions for these training sessions,” – the expert added.
