Due to cold weather and enterprises’ return to work after holidays, Ukraine once again sees shortage of power, which amounts to 20-30% — Kharchenko

During a briefing at Media Center Ukraine — Ukrinform, Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director at the Energy Industry Research Center spoke about why the situation with the electricity supply to private consumers improved during the holidays, and now there is a shortage again.

“The holidays were quite comfortable due to the fact that most of the industry did not work: most of the electricity was directed to powering private consumers, households, and buildings. Of course, this time was more comfortable for everyone. However, we are returning, firstly, to working days. The industry is consuming its part again and it has to work. On the other hand, the temperature is getting lower. Each degree of temperature drop requires an additional 180-200 megawatts of power from the electrical grid to satisfy consumers. This is actually an additional power unit of a coal power plant. The average daily generation deficit is currently 20-30%,” — Kharchenko explained.
