Breast cancer is important to detect at early stages of the disease – then it can be cured – oncologist

Breast cancer among women ranks first among oncological diseases in Ukraine and second among all oncological diseases after skin cancer.

Ihor Kasianenko, head of the city’s Family Health Center of the Consultative Diagnostic Center No. 6, told this during a briefing at the Ukraine-Odesa Media Center.

“For every two primary cancer patients detected, one dies, which is 50% – a very high figure. Every fourth to fifth patient is diagnosed with the fourth stage of cancer. Across the country, 100-110 women die of breast cancer every week. Almost 14 thousand patients are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Ukraine. If cancer is detected at the first stage, 95% of cases can be cured. This means that early prevention of this terrible disease is very important,” the doctor believes.

He emphasized that it is the family health centers that are engaged in cancer prevention. 

“Since the beginning of this year, we have examined 6.5 thousand patients and detected 135 cases of cancer. Do not avoid a general check-up after the age of 40 – it is very important for you. Cancer is getting much younger because women give birth late, don’t breastfeed, don’t give birth at all – all these factors increase the degree of cancer in women,” summarized Ihor Kasyanenko.

The Center has a new digital mammography system and a new state-of-the-art ultrasound machine that helps diagnose cancer at early stages.
