Yurii Boiko: Power restrictions could be minimal or absent this winter if severe frost won’t persist
Ukraine could see few or no power outages this winter, provided temperatures do not fall below 5 degrees Celsius.
Yurii Boiko, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and a member of Ukrenergo’s Supervisory Board, shared this update during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.
“We expect this winter—barring any new attacks or their potential effects—will either pass without restrictions or with only minimal ones as long as temperatures stay above -5 degrees Celsius,” Boiko stated.
However, he cautioned that if temperatures fall below -10 degrees Celsius for more than three consecutive days, scheduled power restrictions will be necessary.
“Extended cold spells—three days or more at -10°C—will likely result in electricity shortages,” Boiko explained. “In such cases, the current energy capacity, alongside imported resources that were increased to 2,100 MW just last week, should still be adequate to meet demand. But during those exceptionally cold days, we will need to implement restriction schedules based on temperature. In my assessment, this could mean up to three stages of restrictions during a particularly severe cold.”
