Ukraine issues guidelines for regional media and local authorities to swiftly respond to russian propaganda

Much of russia’s disinformation targets specific regions, oblasts, cities, and villages in Ukraine. To help regional media and local authorities quickly identify and counter hostile propaganda efforts, Ukraine has introduced a set of guidelines titled “Current Challenges of Disinformation and Counteraction in the Regions of Ukraine.”

This was announced by Alina Tropynina, Senior Analyst at VoxCheck, during a presentation at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Together with the Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council’s Center for Countering Disinformation, we have developed practical guidelines for regional media and local governments. These guidelines include actionable tools and response algorithms, enabling a prompt reaction to various situations, particularly those involving russian propaganda,” Tropynina explained.

The guidelines offer a comprehensive approach to identifying and countering russian disinformation on social media. They include methods for spotting inauthentic content, understanding the tactics used by russian propaganda, detecting bots, and verifying questionable information.

“In essence, we crafted these recommendations to be highly practical and user-friendly, allowing for immediate use. For instance, if you need to verify something, you can quickly locate and utilize the relevant tool from the list,” explained the VoxCheck analyst.

Tropynina also mentioned that the next step will involve conducting training sessions across various regions. These sessions will focus on how to apply the tools and utilize the guidelines effectively.

“We will be rolling out these algorithms across local communities, giving participants the chance to experience, test, and understand them firsthand. Through the training sessions, they’ll practice using the tools and later apply what they’ve learned, using the manuals as a reference,” Alina Tropynina added.
