Ukraine braces for prolonged high fire risk this summer – Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center

During the summer months, Ukraine is anticipated to encounter irregular rainfall patterns, leading to extended periods of heightened risk of severe fire conditions. Specifically, these hazardous periods are likely to manifest in June and August across the nation.

Natalia Ptukha, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, disclosed that during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

The indicative forecasts for the 2024 season project monthly temperatures to run 1-2 degrees above average, with June temperatures remaining close to normal. Precipitation patterns are also anticipated to hover near normal levels, with slightly above-average rainfall expected in April and May in western and northern regions. However, the summer months present a high likelihood of uneven precipitation distribution, both spatially and temporally, raising the risk of prolonged periods of extreme fire danger. Natalia Ptukha emphasized the potential for 7-10 consecutive days without rainfall, primarily in June and August across Ukraine, and also noted the possibility of such conditions in southern regions during May and September.
