Total area under winter crops may be higher than last year – Ministry of Agrarian Policy

Despite sometimes unfavorable weather conditions and various risks, farmers are sowing winter crops. The total area is expected to be larger than last year, mainly due to an increase in wheat sowing.

This was reported by Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“If we talk about trends, winter rapeseed has decreased slightly, by about 10%, or about 100,000 hectares. Again, this is due to the weather, which didn’t allow planting in many regions. For example, the Dnipropetrovsk oblast, which is a major producer of winter rapeseed, was hit by drought and couldn’t proceed with planting. On the other hand, we are seeing growth in winter wheat and barley, with sowing rates up by around 10% on the previous year and progressing even faster. At the beginning of this week, about 8% more winter wheat and barley had been planted than at the same time last year. As a result, the total area planted to winter crops is expected to be larger, mainly due to an increase in wheat plantings compared to last year,” Taras Vysotskyi said.
