The spring cooling snap did not disrupt the sowing season in the Lviv region

“The sowing of spring crops is underway and is due by early June. In the Lviv region, the area under crops for the 2023 harvest was increased by 0.7 thou ha. The main difficulties of agrarians are related to exports and the rise in the price of fertilizers”, said Tetiana Hetman, director of the Agro-Industrial Development Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, at a briefing at the Ukraine-Lviv Media Center.

“More than UAH 34 million was directed to support small farms. Territorial communities will allocate more than UAH 2 million to support local agricultural producers. In addition, such programs as eRobota, provide grants for new gardens, greenhouses and value-added facilities. The Lviv region is a record holder for funding to support regional agricultural enterprises. Last year, about UAH 215 million was allocated to support Lviv farmers as part of this aid”, said Tetiana Hetman, Director of the Agro-Industrial Development Department of the Lviv Regional Military Administration.

“Another challenge for agrarians is the mobilization of men involved in fieldwork. The problem is that reservations granted for a year to employees engaged in fieldwork are being terminated. At the same time, the new booking procedure is not yet fully operational and is time-consuming. And the fact that almost 50% of the core staff will not have reservations may affect the harvest”, Hetman said.

Agrarians of the Lviv region are adapting to market demands and planting new crops. For example, onions and cabbage, for which demand has increased recently. The hostilities have complicated the conditions for agricultural operations in the South of the country.

“We are responding to the market. Onions, cabbage and even bean are the crops that have increased in price, and we are allocating new areas for them to meet demand. If you have young people, it’s an absolute basis on which you can start any business,” said Andrii Spilnyk, head of the Spilnyk A.V. farm, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine-Lviv.
