The Armed Forces of Ukraine tend to increase the number of officer positions held by women – Gender Advisor to the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

The number of female military personnel in Ukraine has increased significantly over the past year. The first wave of growth began in 2014. The second powerful wave occurred with the onset of the full-scale invasion.

It was stated by Oksana Hryhoryeva, Gender Advisor to the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, during the discussion “Women, Peace, Security – Ukraine’s Defense Sector” held at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

“The women who are now in the army are strong, motivated, fearless women who voluntarily went to defend their homeland. Of course, many women now hold leadership positions, and I am pleased that their number is increasing. And all this was made possible by the legislative changes that were adopted back in 2018 when women were allowed to hold combat positions,” she emphasized.

In addition, Oksana Hryhoryeva noted that women have the opportunity to study in any military specialty.

“This is also very important. At the moment, there are this year’s graduates who came in 2018 to study for their chosen specialties. They have already become officers. There is a tendency to increase the number of officer positions in the Armed Forces. There are currently 3,788 of them in the Ground Forces in particular, and this is quite a powerful force.”
