Since the beginning of the year, the secretariat of the commissioner for the protection of the state language has received 266 complaints about violations of language legislation

The number is higher only in Kyiv and Kharkiv region. Yaroslava Vitko-Prysyazhnyuk, representative of the Commissioner for the protection of the state language on South of Ukraine, told this at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Odesa.

However, she noted that this indicates not so much the number of violations of language legislation as the position of citizens trying to defend their rights.

“Since January 1, 2023, we have received 266 appeals regarding violations of language legislation. The first place was taken by the service sector, the second by the language of Internet resources, and the third by the language of advertisements. There were also isolated appeals regarding violations of language legislation in the field of education and healthcare,” – the official said.

She noted that administrative protocols were also drawn up against several representatives of local governments, in particular, against several members of the Odesa City Council who spoke russian at sessions.

Yaroslava Vitko-Prysyazhnyuk also said that since January 1, 2023, many state control measures have been taken to ensure compliance with language legislation in educational institutions.

“Some teachers teach classes in russian. However, paradoxically, all these specialists are fluent in the state language. And they cannot fully formulate an answer as to why they taught classes in russian,” – the official emphasized.
