russia hits Ukraine’s medical infrastructure 1,500 times since full-scale invasion, says Physicians for Human Rights
Since the start of the all-out invasion, russia has targeted Ukraine’s medical infrastructure with 1,500 attacks.
This information was shared by Michelle Heisler, Medical Director of the Physicians for Human Rights NGO and a professor at the University of Michigan, during a press conference at the Media Center Ukraine.
“All countries of the world, including Ukraine and russia, have signed the Geneva conventions. They are obliged to respect this universal right of medical personnel not to be attacked or held as prisoners of war, and as we’ve heard, horrifically tortured and mistreated by russian forces. The (Physicians for Human Rights – Ed.) who I represent and those organizations with partners here helped to document the many ways russian forces and officials have violated this universal right. Since the onset of the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there’ve been some 1,500 direct attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare facilities, workers, and medical infrastructure. And as we’ve heard today, russian forces and officials have detained and arrested hundreds of healthcare workers trying to meet their duty to provide healthcare,” Michelle Heisler noted.
