NATO strategy should be implemented in the Black Sea region – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye

When it comes to the Black Sea, we need to be very realistic. First of all, the Black Sea is an enclosed sea, so its geopolitical and geotrategic characteristics are very peculiar. The world oceans connected to the Black Sea through the Turkish straits, and this is why these particularities are the special circumstances that required special regulations for the passage of vessels of war. Since 1936 we have had this Montreux Convention, which has prevailed for such a long time. It has prevailed so long that it survived World War II and so many other wars. It even worked during the war in Ukraine. And Türkiye, by activating the relevant provision of the Montreux Convention, has banned Russia’s vessels of war to come to the Black Sea. So this is a very important decision, and it has had a strategic impact on the consequences of the war.

This was stated by Basat Öztürk, Director General for International Security Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, speaking at the Second Black Sea Security Conference.

“But the other important thing about the Black Sea region understanding is also enshrined into NATO strategic concepts and NATO willingness to communicate. So I’ve heard calls for NATO strategic for the Black Sea as one of the region of the strategic,” he said.
He also gave a good news: the ratification process of this document is now being completed in Türkiye.
