New evidence of brutal treatment of the population came to light after the de-occupation of Ukrainian territories. Terrible details of the enemy’s actions in the de-occupied territories became public. Numerous places of mass illegal detention of Ukrainian citizens, as well as so-called torture chambers, were uncovered.

Denis Lysenko, a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, made this statement at a press conference at Media Center Ukraine — Ukrinform.

“In Kyiv region, as of now, law enforcement officers have discovered 8 torture chambers that operated systematically. Dozens of people were subjected to torture in them, and about 30 were killed as a result of them being held in these torture chambers. Currently, the existence of 21 torture chambers has been confirmed in the de-occupied territory of Kharkiv region. At this time, 112 victims, who were held in these places, have already provided their testimonies,” he noted.

According to Denys Lysenko, the existence of 11 torture chambers and 8 places of mass illegal detention of citizens has also been confirmed in Kherson region.

“Law enforcement officers have already identified 600 victims who were held in these places. Most of them were questioned and recognized as victims, as a part of the standard procedure,” he added.

In addition, the representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office noted that law enforcement officers across Ukraine are currently checking information on functioning of 55 places of illegal detention of citizens as well as torture chambers

“As for the general situation in the country, the investigators are currently looking into the circumstances of the operation of 55 places of mass illegal detention of citizens, as well as so-called torture chambers, which were discovered in the de-occupied territories. At the same time, about 60 such places are currently located in the temporarily occupied territories. The circumstances of their operation are also being investigated, but there are certain peculiarities,” said Denys Lysenko.

The representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office also noted that the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine have been documenting the facts of the operation of such places since 2014.

“For example, before the start of the large-scale aggression, we found about 100 such places in the territory of certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Over 3,000 Ukrainian citizens, both civilians and prisoners of war, were held there between 2014 and 2022. And torture was practiced in all these places as well as other forms of ill-treatment.”
