In Lviv, 111 Schools Have Shelters, and 16 More Can Use Shelters of Nearby Educational Institutions,” Lviv City Council

In Lviv, 111 schools have their own shelters, and 16 more schools signed agreements to use shelters in other buildings within a 500-m radius. Andrii Zakaliuk, Head of the Education Office of Lviv City Council, stated this during his briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“The range of work carried out in shelters is extremely diverse. Firstly, the entrance and exit must be separate. The shelter must have seats, ventilation, toilets, medicine supplies, and firefighting equipment. Some issues are still being addressed because of the time pressure and because some work could not be completed within the time frame available. Some work requires major investments and will be carried out later,” Andrii Zakaliuk explained.

According to Ihor Brehin, Head of the Emergencies Prevention Office of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv Oblast, the shelter preparations are still ongoing in about 10% of Lviv’s educational institutions. He indicated that only seven out of 284 educational institutions reporting to the Lviv City Council had no shelters.
