Gender equality in medical facilities affects quality of patient care – study results

Last year, the TB Europe Coalition, in collaboration with the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, conducted a study examining aspects of gender, equality and inclusion in the workplace among health care workers involved in the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis. The results showed how gender policies in medical institutions affect both working conditions and the quality of care provided.

This was reported by Yuliia Kalancha, Executive Director of the charity foundation “TB Europe Coalition”, during a discussion at the Media Center Ukraine.

She said the study allowed for a broader perspective on the issue – not only from the patient’s point of view, but also considering the challenges faced by health workers. Participants included TB facilities staff, phthisiologists, primary care physicians, government officials, and representatives from civil society and educational institutions.

At the same time, she emphasized that the study showed a direct link between workplace gender policies and the quality of services provided to patients.

“The findings confirm that workplace gender policies affect not only working conditions, but also the quality of care patients receive. If medical institutions themselves lack equal opportunities, a culture of respect and non-discrimination, this has a direct impact on the way healthcare services are delivered,” said Yuliia Kalancha.
