Enemy’s destruction of Trypilska TPP to significantly increase nuclear energy load – Hryhorii Plachkov
During the massive attack on Ukraine on the night of Thursday, April 11, the enemy destroyed the Trypilska thermal power plant in Kyiv region. In addition to other consequences, such destruction will increase the load on the nuclear power industry.
Hryhorii Plachkov, Head of the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“There was a fairly serious strike on the Trypilska TPP. The enemy has been attacking our unified electrical grid, our key substations of NPC Ukrenergo since March 22. I think that this is a big enough damage to our energy system. Therefore, it is necessary to restore it, as it is necessary to try to restore peaking power plants, because nuclear energy is still foundational, and either adding or easing its load is quite difficult. And thermal power plants, combined heat and power plants, hydroelectric power plants and pumped storage plants take up the task of mitigating evening and morning peaks and smoothing out night dips. Therefore, quite serious damage was caused to Ukraine’s unified electrical grid,” he explained.
According to Hryhorii Plachkov, the nuclear power industry is already bearing the maximum load, but after russia’s next strikes and the destruction caused by them, the nuclear power industry will be under even greater load.
“Our nuclear power industry is already bearing a maximum load, because this winter all nuclear power units on Ukraine-controlled territory were in operation. But there are no eternal engines, fuel must be reloaded, equipment must be repaired, power units must be taken out for repairs. Therefore, I think that nuclear energy will assume such a big role, the role that it already has, as it is an island of stability. And now, I think that even more responsibility will fall on nuclear workers, in order to pass the summer season, because the temperature will rise, everyone will turn on the air conditioners, consumption will increase. And in order to pass the autumn-winter peaks, we have to prepare for the next heating season,” he said.
