Council of Europe working to hold russia accountable: work to collect evidence of aggression and set up a compensation mechanism is underway

russia’s war against Ukraine has been going on for 9 years. If 9 years ago, the occupation of Crimea was a horror, then the full-scale invasion became the bloodiest. It is time for the kremlin to pay for everything.

Marija Pejcinovic Buric, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, made this statement at the Black Sea Security Conference.

“The Council of Europe is supporting the Ukrainian Prosecutor General in investigations into serious human rights violations committed by russia in Ukraine since early March last year. We are working to set up a register of damage,” she said.

Marija Pejcinovic Buric pointed out that russia’s punishment mustn’t be delayed, as the kremlin continues to commit international crimes.

That is why we need witnesses and evidence that can be used to do that, and register of damage will be the first legal step for their accountability,” the expert noted.

Marija Pejcinovic Buric said that the Council of Europe is also working on a mechanism to get compensation from russia.
