Combat medics really lack the universal blood type 0(I)Rh (minus) – a medic from the Hospitallers battalion

This is a universal one that can be used in an emergency evacuation when there is no time to check the blood type of group wounded soldier. Daryna Smolnikova, member of the Hospitallers medical battalion, co-founder of the charity project “Tvoya krov mozhe voyuvaty” (Your Blood Can Fight), told this at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Odesa.

She noted that a package of donated blood costs more than 1000 hryvnias, and it is the only option on the battlefield.

“Under certain conditions, blood can be stored in special points for 31–35 days, but it is delayed. Stocks at the storage points are replenished every week. And we really lack universal blood of group 0(I)Rh (minus) on the battlefield. It is needed in case of urgent evacuation, when there is no time to check the blood type of group wounded soldier” – the expert noted.

In her opinion, the number of donors in wartime should be increased, and the blood distribution system should be revised, because “some points do not have enough blood, and I some points have too much, and it is simply poured out.”
