Border protection: in 2023, Rivne oblast set up region’s defense budget with UAH 363 million
In 2023, Rivne oblast set up a defense budget at the regional level, for which funds were allocated by 52 communities. The funds are used for fortification and engineering works, as well as for the logistical support of all components of the defense forces. If necessary, it will also be possible to set up a similar budget for 2024 as well.
Vitaliy Koval, Head of Rivne Oblast Military Administration, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“We had a very successful experiment in creating a defense budget at the level of the regional budget. 64 communities had a meeting at the beginning of 2023 and decided that the issue of defending the northern borders, the border with belarus, is not only a matter for 6 border communities, but all communities are responsible for collective security. Therefore, we identified 52 communities, which could afford it, and they allocated funds. This UAH 363 million went to the defense budget. We use that money to pay for fortification and engineering works, as well as logistical support of all components of the defense forces. It was a very active year in terms of strengthening the region,” he explained.
Vitaliy Koval stressed that there will be no difficulties in solving future challenges.
“We are still working out the needs for next year. We will understand in the near future what support there will be from the state budget for these needs. And, if there is a need for this, we will gather with the communities in the shortest possible time. Here I would like to thank both the local deputies and the heads of territorial communities, and I would like to remind you that all decisions on the allocation of funds were passed unanimously at the meetings of territorial communities. And there was such unity and solidarity here. I am sure that if there is such a challenge in the future, we will similarly do it immediately, because we understand that the number one task is Victory!” Vitaliy Koval concluded.
