“We have effectively isolated the russian federation in all international human rights institutions and platforms” – Representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights
Ukraine has successfully achieved the isolation of russia in international human rights institutions and platforms, demonstrating global support for Ukraine, including from ombudsmen around the world.
This was emphasized by Oleksandr Osipov, representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Equal Rights and Freedoms, Right of National Minorities, Political and Religious Beliefs, during a discussion at the Media Center Ukraine.
“In 2022, the russian federation was excluded from the International Ombudsman Institute, the largest network of ombudsmen in the world. In 2023, it was expelled from the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions. This year, the russian ombudsman was expelled from the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen. And a month ago, the russian ombudsman was no longer officially recognized as a national human rights institution by the UN Subcommittee on Accreditation. Thus, as of today, we have effectively isolated the russian federation from all international human rights institutions, platforms and the global stage as a whole,” Osipov said.
He stressed that any initiative aimed at further isolating russia and holding it accountable must be supported.
“The series of actions to exclude russia from international organizations, ombudsman platforms and national human rights institutions clearly reflects the global support for Ukraine from ombudsmen around the world. We hope for their continued support, especially in bringing the russian federation to justice for the crimes it commits,” Osipov added.
As a reminder, Ukrainian survivors of CRSV prepared an open letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres urging him to put russia on the UN’s List of Shame.
