Ukrainian NGOs urge the UN to include russia in the “list of shame” for sexualized violence

Ukrainian civil activists are calling on the UN to include russia in its annual “list of shame” to hold it accountable for systematic war crimes.

In 2008, the UN Security Council recognized sexualized violence in military conflicts as a threat to global peace and security. One method of addressing this issue is the annual report by the UN Secretary-General on conflict-related sexual violence. An appendix is prepared for the report listing confirmed perpetrators who systematically commit such crimes.

Andrii Kochmuradov, a representative of the NGO “December 29th”, stated this at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“russia’s sexual violence cases have been documented and proven. However, the aggressor country has not yet been included in any lists. russia has not faced any sanctions for human rights violations. There have been sanctions on individual citizens, yes, but not on russia as a whole. Our initiative aims to draw attention to this issue. russia should be on such a list,” he said.

According to activists, russia has never appeared on this list.
