Ukraine planned to export excess electricity before the August 26 immense attack, Prime Minister’s Advisor and Ukrenergo Board Member
Prior to the large-scale enemy attack on August 26, Ukraine was preparing to export surplus electricity, according to Yurii Boiko, Advisor to the Prime Minister and member of the Supervisory Board of Ukrenergo.
Throughout much of July and August 2024, Ukrainians experienced nearly uninterrupted electricity supply, with no scheduled blackouts. During periods of high solar activity, when there was an excess of electricity in the grid, NPC Ukrenergo exported this surplus energy abroad, as detailed by Boiko during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
Boiko explained that the power sector faced two choices: either sell the excess electricity or bear the costs of unsold energy. Whenever feasible, NPC Ukrenergo opted to export the surplus.
Experts had anticipated that barring enemy attacks, there would have been no shortage of electricity for consumers until the end of October, with surplus energy slated for export. However, the events of August 26 disrupted these plans. Boiko indicated that the energy sector would soon provide detailed information on the attack’s impact on critical infrastructure.
