Ukraine Must Phase Out Coal-Fired Power Generation – Energy Research Center
To avoid dependence on energy imports, the government must build new power generation capacity.
Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, made this statement during a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center.
“The situation with coal-fired power generation is quite complex. While we may still be able to obtain technical assistance for restoration, even in the short term we must phase out coal-fired capacity. Both from a climate perspective and in terms of our aspiration to join the EU. This requires Ukraine to build large-scale capacity to replace coal-fired generation,” said Oleksandr Kharchenko.
The government understands these processes and has the tools to stimulate the construction of new capacity.
“A tender will soon be announced for 1.3 gigawatts of new capacity, which will support the state in a certain way, and investors will have certain additional guarantees. This is a major challenge, and it must be addressed over the next 3–4 years,” explained the expert.
