Ukraine has to start planning now for how it will deliver justice to people from the occupied territories — legal experts

War crimes trials drag on for years and often never reach a verdict. That is a serious problem for the victims, who do not believe they will ever receive either material compensation or satisfaction.

So said Daryna Pidhorna, a legal expert and analyst at the Raphael Lemkin Society, at the International Forum of the Crimea Platform Expert Network.

“This is how victims lose faith in the courts, in law enforcement, and in the state as a whole,” she said. “We need to do something about it now. Because when we come to the de-occupied territories, Crimea in particular, one question will be acute: can we deliver justice for everyone who lived under occupation? The answer lies in non-judicial mechanisms.”
