Ukraine has published the “Moscow Conventions” to tell the world about torture and inhuman treatment of prisoners of war
Ukraine has created an alternative version of the Geneva Convention, the “Moscow Conventions”, on the treatment of prisoners of war. The aim of the project is to show the world how russia violates international treaties and international law, and to show the self-made rules by which the aggressor state operates today.
This was discussed during a presentation at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, over the past 10 years, instead of working, instead of being historically a “pill” against cruelty, the Geneva Conventions, in my opinion, have turned into a “medicine” that makes you blind. Everyone acknowledges and publicly states that the Russian Federation deliberately violates the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war. But what is being done about it? It seems that the world is simply blind – on the one hand they talk about it, but on the other hand they do nothing. That’s why we came up with the idea of presenting the ‘Moscow Conventions’, the ones that russia actually works by,” said Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.
He noted that the norms of the “Moscow Conventions” on the treatment of prisoners of war include a document describing 15 stories of former POWs.
According to the Commissioner, a public information campaign will be launched to make every country in the world aware of the “Moscow Conventions”, since the Geneva Convention does not exist for the russian federation.
He also pointed out that similar treatment of civilians occurred when russia occupied parts of Moldova in 1992. The same principles were applied during the first and second Chechen wars and russia’s aggression against Georgia.
“In our opinion, the title ‘Moscow Conventions’ is significant. It means that this document is a form of dystopia, an ideology where control through fear and violence has become a tool for managing people held in russian captivity. I believe that the ‘Moscow Conventions’ must show the whole world that this is a challenge not only for Ukrainians, but for everyone. If the world does not react, everyone should understand clearly: another country will be next. Russia will do the same to other nationalities and nations. These conventions are not about Ukrainians specifically, but about russia’s attitude toward everyone else,” Lubinets said.
He added that the international community must finally recognize the pain of Ukrainians and take decisive action – immediately condemning russia and ending all economic, diplomatic and political cooperation with the russian dictator and the russian federation.
