Tools to grant IAEA expanded mandate are being discussed within the President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula – Oleh Korikov

As part of the implementation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, point one—”Nuclear and Radiation Safety”, consultations with partner countries are currently underway to strengthen safety oversight at ZNPP. An independent safety assessment will be conducted involving representatives of nuclear and radiation safety regulatory authorities of the partner countries and those countries that have joined sharing responsibilities for Ukraine’s Peace Plan implementation point one. 

Oleh Korikov, Acting Chairman and Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine announced this during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform. 

In particular, according to Oleh Korikov, the tools currently being discussed under point one of President Zelensky’s Peace Formula aim at strengthening the role of the IAEA and expanding its powers.

“The instruments that are currently being discussed under point one of President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula are generally aimed at strengthening the role of the IAEA, expanding the IAEA’s mandate, and providing additional resources to create a basis for it actually to influence the situation. And to truly affect, to help indeed, to ensure increased security. These are ongoing discussions,” he explained.

In addition, according to Oleh Korikov, the issues of establishing an international coordination center for nuclear and radiation safety with headquarters in Kyiv are being discussed.

“Discussions are ongoing to restore the safe operation of Zaporizhia NPP after de-occupation within the framework of this center,” he added.
