The shortage of vegetable storage facilities in the country significantly affects prices – Dmytro Solomchuk
There is currently a significant shortage of vegetable storage facilities in Ukraine. The lack of adequate storage capacity has a negative impact on the prices of these goods.
This issue was highlighted by Dmytro Solomchuk, MP and member of Verkhovna Rada’s Agrarian and Land Policy Committee, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“There is a significant shortage of vegetable storage facilities in Ukraine, as was the case last year and the year before, and it remains so today. Many farmers from the Kherson oblast and other areas have moved to central and western Ukraine, where they have started growing vegetables, or local farmers in these regions have started growing vegetables as well. However, there is nowhere to store the produce, and in the spring we will again see a situation where Ukrainian vegetables will be quite expensive,” he said.
He emphasized that an adequate number of vegetable storage facilities would help stabilize vegetable prices, making any price increases in the spring less significant and noticeable.
“Storage facilities would allow for price stabilization, so Ukrainians would see prices on store shelves in April-May that are comparable to those in September-October – perhaps slightly higher due to energy costs used for storage, but still relatively normal and stable, rather than two or three times higher,” Solomchuk added.
