The IAEA was invited to support putting ZNPP Unit 5 into the cold shutdown condition – Oleh Korikov

The Nuclear Safety and Security Regulatory Agency of Ukraine, in circumstances of irresponsible and unpredictable actions of the occupiers, has decided to switch ZNPP Unit 5 to a cold shutdown state.

Oleh Korikov, Acting State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) Chairman – Chief State Inspector for Ukraine National Nuclear Safety Regulator, made the relevant announcement during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform. 

“However, the Russian occupiers impede Ukraine’s order to cease the fifth reactor use, preventing Ukrainian personnel from implementing the decision. Thus, the IAEA was asked to support putting power unit No. 5 into a cold shutdown mode,” he said and expressed hope.

As a reminder, on June 8, 2023, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine issued an order to the State Enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC) Energoatom to restrict the operation of Zaporizhia NPP Unit 5 as an object of state supervision to the cold shutdown state.
