Some regions of Ukraine will increase sown areas this year, but crops will change – Dmytro Solomchuk
This year, the sown areas in some regions will increase. However, due to economic unprofitability, farmers will grow different crops.
Dmytro Solomchuk, People’s Deputy of Ukraine, member of Verkhovna Rada’s Agrarian and Land Policy Committee, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“It still depends on the weather conditions, because due to heavy downpours and rains there are even flooded areas. If the weather improves, I think they (sown areas – Ed.) will be at the same level as last season. According to some predictions, the areas will be 2-3% smaller. But I disagree, because, for example, 50,000 hectares were cleared of mines in Kherson region last year, and another 180,000 hectares this year. That is, in certain regions the sown areas are even increasing,” he explained.
At the same time, Dmytro Solomchuk noted that this season’s crops will be different.
“The fact that crops are changing is undeniable. Because due to economic unprofitability agrarians have no desire to sow corn, so instead they are switching to soybeans,” he said.
