Some 20,000 tuberculosis cases recorded in Ukraine last year
In 2023, about 20,000 tuberculosis cases were recorded in Ukraine, 640 of them – among children, said Ihor Kuzin, Deputy Minister of Health, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine, during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“If you look at the statistics, over the last year, Ukraine has recorded an average of about 20,000 tuberculosis cases, and 640 of them – among children. We are recording a spike in this disease among the children’s population,” he noted.
Yana Terleieva, Head of the Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Department of the Public Health Center, pointed out that today the situation with tuberculosis remains difficult nationwide.
According to her, the regions with the highest burden of tuberculosis include Odesa, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Zakarpattia, and Volyn oblasts.
“I would like to emphasize that today, in the conditions of the full-scale war, prolonged stress, extended stay in basements, impoverishment of the population and the state of the country’s economy, we once again draw attention to the fact that, our country is generally classified among those with a high mortality rate in the European region. A notable feature is the spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis in our country,” she added and emphasized the need to seek medical help as soon as possible, since today tuberculosis is curable.
