Smoldering at Chornobyl NPP extinguished – State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate

According to operational reports, on Monday morning, February 17, no smouldering was detected at the site of the enemy attack on the Chornobyl NPP shelter.

This was announced by Oleh Korikov, Head of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate and Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“As of this morning, operational reports indicate that there is no more smouldering. Thermal imaging is being carried out. The main challenge is that there is no vantage point for direct visual observation. From the top of the arch, we cannot see the hole or all the work in progress, so operations are relying on drone footage and thermal imaging. However, the current situation seems cautiously optimistic and will continue to be monitored,” Korikov said.
