Security Service of Ukraine and Prosecutor General’s Office inquiry into public calls for genocide against Ukrainians
Russia’s genocidal rhetoric on the Ukrainian people is punishable under the UN Convention. And now the Security Service of Ukraine and the Office of the Prosecutor General are conducting relevant criminal investigations into Russia’s Eliminationist Rhetoric in particular, public incitement to genocide.
Taras Semkiv, Deputy Head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in Conditions of Armed Conflict of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine made this announcement, at the country’s main discussion platform BrainHub at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“The Security Service of Ukraine is conducting a relevant pre-trial investigation, and the Office of the Prosecutor General is providing procedural guidance in a criminal probe into genocide, including public calls for genocide,” he said, adding that the investigation is currently being carried out in various areas.
At the same time, he noted that since Russia’s President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Foreign Affairs are granted a certain diplomatic immunity, there is no possibility to bring them to justice in Ukraine. However, international institutions, the establishment of a tribunal on the crime of aggression, and relevant decisions of the International Criminal Court can influence.
In turn, Taras Semkiv emphasized that Ukraine needs to constantly work and use systematic research to ensure that none of the propagandists and none of those who are now not just pursuing menacing against Ukraine but committing international crimes evade responsibility and face trial and are brought to justice.
