russians executed over 100 Ukrainian prisoners of war last year – Amnesty International report

Executions and deaths in captivity are among the war crimes committed by russia against Ukrainian prisoners of war. According to a new report by Amnesty International, russia executed 109 Ukrainian prisoners of war last year.

This was announced by Veronika Velch, Director of Amnesty International Ukraine, during the presentation of the report at the Media Center Ukraine.

“We categorize crimes against Ukrainian prisoners of war into several groups. The first includes executions and deaths in custody. Last year alone, we documented about 109 executions of prisoners of war. And that was just last year. At least two high-ranking russian officials, Dmitry Medvedev and Ramzan Kadyrov, have publicly called for either not taking Ukrainian soldiers prisoner or executing them,” Velch said.

According to Veronika Welch, one of the respondents reported seeing Ukrainian prisoners of war beaten to death in front of him, and this also happened to civilians. He also spoke about torture and how people were driven to suicide.

It is worth noting, that the Amnesty International report, “A Deafening Silence: Ukrainians held incommunicado, forcibly disappeared and tortured in russian captivity” is based on interviews with 104 people, including former prisoners of war. It documents crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in russian captivity.
