Rome Statute: active military personnel’s views on ratification

More than two-thirds of active Ukrainian military personnel have a positive attitude towards the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court with 37% fully supporting the idea, and 34% somewhat supporting it.

Maksym Yelihulashvili, an expert at the Ukraine 5 AM Coalition, made this statement at Media Center Ukraine during the presentation of the findings of the survey conducted among active military personnel.

“There is no significant backlash against the Rome Statute among civilians, and a similar trend is observed among the military. Absolute support (for the ratification of the Rome Statute among active military personnel — Ed.) is at 37%, with additional 34% somewhat supporting it. This means over a half of those polled do not see an issue with the Rome Statute’s ratification. Therefore, allegations that the military is against are not supported by the available data. In addition, there are no substantial differences between the officers and non-commissioned officers, which is critically important,” Maksym Yelihulashvili noted.

It is worth noting that the study involved a survey of 660 active-duty Ukrainian military personnel, conducted from July 25 to August 12 this year through formalized interviews.

As reported, on Wednesday, August 21, the Verkhovna Rada ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. A total of 281 MPs voted for the corresponding draft law No. 0285 on the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and its amendments at the plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada.
