Power output of Unit 2 at South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant currently reduced to 66% – Oleh Korikov explained the reasons

The power output of Unit 2 of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant was reduced to 66% due to the shutdown of one of the four pumping units that circulated water through the reactor.

This information was provided by Oleh Korikov, Head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“An operational event occurred at the South Ukraine NPP. Increased vibrations were detected in one of the four pumping units responsible for circulating water through the reactor – the main circulation pump. This unit was shut down, resulting in a 66% reduction in Unit 2 power output,” he explained.

According to Korikov, the operator, NNEGC Energoatom, is planning a series of measures to restore the operational state of this pumping unit. Once completed, he emphasized, the unit will again operate at full nominal capacity.
