On the strategic level, the initial russian sea supremacy has been broken by Ukraine’s groundbreaking naval actions – Swedish Minister for Civil Defence

During the Second Black Sea Security Conference, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defence of Sweden, said that Ukraine has effectively made use of the opportunity by restraining the freedom of movement of the russian Black Sea navy using drones and missiles. Effectively denying russia from engaging its military capabilities in temporarily occupied Crimea – russia’s center of gravity in the Black Sea – is key to breaking the incessant missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian population.

“Ukraine has taken action to secure the sea lines of communication, to use amphibious forces, to support the land campaign and to strategically strike against critical russian capabilities. Despite the limited maritime resources, the Ukrainian Navy has achieved effective sea denial in the North-West of the Black Sea and has managed to degrade the russian Black Sea fleet. An expansion of these actions is required to establish sea control and sustain safe sea lines of communication. Ukraine has used creativity and courage and achieved a change on the naval operational arena by using indirect methods and alternative means. russia, on the other hand, has shown the price of complacency in their posture. On the strategic level, the initial russian sea supremacy has been broken by Ukraine’s groundbreaking naval actions. The use of unmanned systems can gain effect on all levels – tactical, operational as well as on the strategic level,” he said.
