No strike group near the Belarusian border poses a threat to Ukraine for now, says the Border Guard Service

Despite russia’s ongoing deployment of troops for joint exercises with Belarus, Ukrainian authorities say no immediate threat has been detected from that direction so far. However, the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) cautions that provocations and attempts to divert Ukrainian forces toward the area cannot be ruled out.

Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for the SBGS, addressed the situation at the Media Center Ukraine.

“The number of russian units currently stationed in Belarus is insignificant. We must take a measured view of what these joint Belarus-russia exercises will entail, and our intelligence is closely monitoring developments,” Demchenko said. “The active phase of the drills is scheduled for September, but right now they are still in the preparatory stage. As the exercises intensify, the risks to our country will rise accordingly.”

He added that even during the height of these exercises, careful assessment will be required to determine how many forces and resources russia commits to Belarus.

“At present, there is no strike group on the Belarusian border that threatens Ukraine directly. Nonetheless, this region remains as much a concern for us as ever,” Demchenko emphasized.
