Most persecuted citizens in occupied Crimea are targeted based on religious beliefs

The vast majority of citizens persecuted by the russian occupiers in Crimea are targeted based on religious grounds. So, as of January 2024, there are at least 100 cases of persecution of Crimean Tatars based on religious beliefs.

Tamila Tasheva, Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

“We know that as of January 2024, there are at least 100 cases of persecution of Crimean Tatars on religious grounds. At the same time, it is worth noting that there are 208 cases of Crimean political prisoners with 125 of them being Crimean Tatars. That is, the vast majority of persecutions are really based on religious grounds,” said Tamila Tasheva.

She also noted that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is one of the religious communities that the occupiers have actively persecuted on the territory of Crimea since the occupation of the peninsula. In addition, Tamila Tasheva also mentioned that Jehovah’s Witnesses and representatives of New Generation, an international religious organization, are also being prosecuted.
