Maria Pejčinović-Burić: The Council of Europe will make every effort to ensure the sustainability of democracy, the rule of law and security in the face of Russia’s authoritarian regime
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović-Burić, emphasized this during the Second Black Sea Security Conference.
“The Black Sea region is a meeting point of cultures and traditionsб and its peace and prosperity are vital for those who live these and far beyond. Russia’s illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea signaled the beginning of a spiral of dissent which has resulted in its brutal and ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as action designed to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and the Republic of Moldova. The Council of Europe is dedicated to ensuring human rights, democracy and the rule of law and through these the democratic security that stands in contrast to authoritarianism we have been clear about.,” the Secretary General of the Council of Europe stressed.
She noted that the Council of Europe has stated its commitment and desire to ensure a sustainable response to Russian aggression, and, she added, holding Russia to account is a key element in ensuring this stability.
