Life-Saving Inventions: Students from the Frontline Region of Donetsk Won a Young Inventors’ Competition

Ukrainian children won 3 of the 5 top global prizes from Dassault Systèmes, beating out 50,000 peers from around the world. The students proposed designs for a bracelet that uses vibrations to alert people with hearing impairments to missile threats and sends an SOS signal with a single press, as well as a wind turbine that, without being connected to the power grid, restores movement and oxygen to silted-up bodies of water that are “suffocating” due to a lack of circulation.

Ben Cohenburger, an American lawyer and founder and director of the Ukraine Invention Convention, spoke about this during a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center. 

“All contest participants proposed incredible innovations. As a lawyer, I can say that all copyrights of the child inventors will be protected. After the pilot project, we want to scale it up, and we plan to have 500 participants in the project as early as next year,” he said. 

During the briefing, the winning scientists presented their inventions.

Stepan, a young scientist who invented the SafetyBracelet, plans to perfect it. The estimated cost of the product will be $30. 

“My grandparents have hearing and speech impairments. They can’t hear air raid sirens, so I decided to make this bracelet,” the scientist shared.

Yaroslava, the young woman who proposed a turbine to restore lakes, was inspired by the saltwater bodies around Sloviansk to help maintain their balance. Developing the prototype took about three months.
