Language Policy Violations: The State Language Protection Commissioner’s Office has levied fines against several civil servants and local government representatives
In 2023, a total of 128 decisions were issued by the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, comprising 61 warnings and 20 fines. Among the fines, 16 amounted to UAH 3,400, while 3 were higher at UAH 8,500 due to repeated violations within a year. Those penalized encompassed civil servants, local deputies, as well as the mayor and deputy mayor.
Taras Kremin, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, issued this statement while briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“Analyzing the demographics of the violators, we find a mix of civil servants, and local officials including a mayor and a deputy mayor from various regional centers. It’s worth noting that these individuals have begun using Ukrainian in their communications, resulting in a decline in recorded violations during public addresses. However, despite our increasing access to live sessions of local councils for research and analysis, infractions persist during interactions with citizens and at public events,” explained Taras Kremin.
