IAEA to begin monitoring electrical substations at Ukrainian Nuclear Plants for safety, says Oleh Korikov
The International Atomic Energy Agency is set to start monitoring electrical substations critical to the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. The first inspection by the monitoring mission will take place next week at a substation severely damaged by russian attacks.
Oleh Korikov, head of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate and Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, made the announcement during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“During IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi’s recent visit to Ukraine, we held meetings with top state officials, where it was agreed that the IAEA would expand its oversight in the country. The new scope includes international monitoring of electrical substations that are vital to nuclear plant safety, ensuring power supply or consumption as needed from the grid,” Korikov stated. “This initiative will significantly enhance nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine. We are currently working with IAEA experts and other stakeholders on the details of this plan. The first visit of the monitoring mission will take place next week at a substation that sustained heavy damage from russian shelling.”
