IAEA experts discover cluster munition remnants at power substations: Oleh Korikov

In late 2024, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts conducted three inspections at electrical substations, uncovering remnants of cluster munitions during their visits.

The findings were disclosed by Oleh Korikov, Head of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate (SNRIU) and Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Following directives from the country’s political leadership—the President of Ukraine and the Minister of Energy—we expanded the scope of IAEA international monitoring to include electrical substations. These facilities are critical for transmitting energy from nuclear power plants to the national grid or, when necessary, supplying electricity for the plants’ internal operations, as is currently the case at Zaporizhia NPP,” Korikov stated.

He detailed the inspections, noting that three visits were carried out by IAEA experts by the end of 2024. “As part of this effort, relevant recommendations were issued, and the war’s impact on these substations was recorded. I can confirm that IAEA experts identified and logged remnants of cluster munitions on the premises of these substations. This evidence has been officially documented and further underscores russia’s unlawful terrorist actions,” Korikov emphasized.
