Hydrological drought hits Ukraine as spring floods fail to materialize

Ukraine is experiencing a hydrological drought as most of the country’s rivers are missing their typical spring flood, pushing some waterways into a low-water phase.

Viktoriia Korniienko, deputy head of the Hydrological Forecasts Department, Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, confirmed the situation during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Normally, we discuss rising water levels and flooding, but now, due to the absence of a pronounced spring flood in most Ukrainian rivers, we are facing a situation where some rivers have already entered the low-water phase, meaning a hydrological drought,” Korniienko explained.

She noted that the average monthly water content in rivers has dropped to less than 20% of the climatic norm, posing a serious threat to economic sectors reliant on water resources. The situation, she warned, could deteriorate further in the summer months.
