Hryhorii Plachkov: International pressure on russia over ZNPP reduces risk of incidents at nuclear plant
The international community should maintain pressure on russia concerning the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The communiqué signed at the Global Peace Summit is a significant step in this matter.
This point was emphasized by Hryhorii Plachkov, former Head of the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation (2017-2021), during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“I fully support this communiqué. The more the global community pressures the russian federation over the ZNPP issue, the easier it will be for us to prevent incidents and off-design events at the plant,” said Plachkov.
He also noted that ZNPP is a critical asset for russia.
“Unfortunately, the occupier ignores international treaties and conventions on the safe use of nuclear energy, physical protection of nuclear infrastructure, and management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. Despite the communiqué, the invader remains entrenched at ZNPP. For the russian federation, seizing and holding the ZNPP is non-negotiable, as it echoes their political agenda,” he added.
