Gender inequality must be addressed from childhood – Yaroslava Lopatina

Gender equality should be instilled from childhood through upbringing and education.

This perspective was shared by Yaroslava Lopatina, Head of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation Ukraine, during a discussion at the Media Center Ukraine.

“We need to overcome gender inequality. It is crucial to start at the very beginning – with education. This includes what we call positive masculinity and educating girls with the  concept of equality in mind,” she said.

Yaroslava Lopatina also gave an example of how to educate young people about gender equality.

“For example, we have the ‘Girls Act’ program, where we work with girls, with teenagers, including boys who participate as well. We talk about practical things like how to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections. We talk about leadership – how a girl can become a change-maker in her community. We also discuss future careers and employment, because a woman’s well-being is fundamentally linked to her economic independence,” said Yaroslava Lopatina.
